BMW 507 Books and Sources

The period magazines, BMW's catalogue, brochures and press kit, the BMW V8 Club's data sheets and the later articles behind every page of this independent reference to the BMW 507, each listed with its address where it has one, and with a pill that grades it.

In 1955 Denis Jenkinson was shown round BMW's works in Munich for Motor Sport, and auto motor und sport reported the Frankfurt show beside a price list dated 22 September. The list below gives every source the site cites, from the period press to BMW's own catalogue, brochures and releases, the BMW V8 Club's data sheets and the later articles, each with its address where it has one.source 1source 2

How the sources are graded

The pill beside each source says what kind of source it is, on a scale from Primary to Unchecked. Primary means made at the time, or by the maker or someone who was there. For the 507 that is, first, the press that reported the car as it was shown, tested, priced and given up, among them Motor Sport, auto motor und sport, Sports Cars Illustrated, Motor Trend, Automotive News and Der Spiegel; then BMW's catalogue of 1957 and its brochures of 1958 and 1959; and BMW's own later texts, among them its magazine profile of Albrecht von Goertz of 2004, its press kit of 2005, BMW Group Classic's history of 2015 and its press releases. Two official German texts are primary too: the Finance Ministry's page for its stamp of 2015 and the published series of average earnings. John Surtees's own website is primary too, for his car. BMW's texts count as primary for what BMW said, and they are one family of sources: two of them agreeing, or one of them with Karlheinz Lange's research, which BMW published, count as a single source.

Reference means careful later work, among them Motor Sport's histories and buying guides, Bimmer's articles, Der Spiegel's profile of Goertz and the Austrian Embassy's of Max Hoffman, the BMW Foundation's biography of Herbert Quandt, the BMW V8 Club's data sheets, a specialist blog that reproduces Nissan's letter to Goertz, news reports and obituaries, and books and articles on Giovanni Michelotti's work. Database sources are databases read one entry at a time: a results site and a Wikimedia Commons category. Unchecked covers enthusiast websites, among them carrozzieri-italiani's pages on Michelotti; a page cites one only beside a stronger source, or names it in the sentence.source 3source 4source 5source 6source 7source 8source 9source 10source 11source 12source 13source 14source 15source 16source 17source 18source 19source 20

Reading a citation

Elsewhere on the site, the small numbers at the end of a section lead to the list of sources at the foot of that page, numbered by first use on that page, so one source can carry different numbers on different pages. Each entry gives, after the work, the place in it to look: a page, a table, a price list or a passage, such as p. 14 of BMW's Mobile Tradition live for 2004, on Goertz's commission. Here every source the site cites is listed once, with its address in plain text.source 11

The sources that carry most weight

SourceWhat it gives
BMW's press kit of April 2005The maker's account of the 507 and 503 for their fiftieth year, with its data sheet: the cars with the series body, the changes of June 1957, the prices and the cars that went to America
Motor Sport, 1955–59Jenkinson's visit to the works and his Frankfurt report of 1955, the drive of September 1956 and the Earls Court guides
auto motor und sport, 1955–58The Frankfurt report of 1955, the German price lists and the measured runs made for Motor Revue in 1958
The American press, 1957–59Sports Cars Illustrated's factory data of 1957 and road test of 1959, Motor Trend's annual guide and Automotive News's port-of-entry prices
BMW's catalogue and brochures, 1957–59The specification as BMW printed it while the car was sold
The BMW V8 ClubThe chassis range, the line between Series I and Series II and the changes made at it
Bimmer, 2009 and 2013Karlheinz Lange's research in the BMW Archive: the project's dates, the build of Elvis Presley's car and the counts by series and market
Der Spiegel, 1959–60 and 2011BMW's losses and the meeting of 9 December 1959; the profile of Goertz

Where they disagree, each reading appears with its source. The clearest case is the number built: the totals in print differ, and the production page sets them out.source 9source 1source 21source 3source 22source 2source 23source 4source 24source 5source 6source 8source 25source 26source 27source 13source 28source 12source 29source 7source 11source 30

Printed works

Besides the magazines, BMW's own printed works are cited: the catalogue of its V8 range of 1957, and the 507 brochures of 1958, in French, and 1959, in German. Karlheinz Lange's book on the car for BMW, The Legendary BMW 507 (2005), reaches the site through Bimmer's articles of 2009 and 2013, which report his research in the BMW Archive.source 8source 25source 26source 28source 12
